Isolated on one of the promontories dominating Muelle Bay, Kalaw Place brings to mind the settings of “Sleeping Beauty” as soon as you walk through its large iron gate. The are is filled with molave trees, bougainvillea, cycas, fan palms, narra trees and wild orchids, all growing over wild grass. The main house, constructed more than 20 years ago by Mr. Kalaw – owner of the resort, is perched on a platform facing the sea, completely hidden by vegetation.

Mr. Kalaw put his whole heart into this beautiful, romantic old house. Twisted tree trunks serve as a columns and balustrades, bamboo as staircase ramps. Glass and capiz bay windows punctuate the facade made of huge bamboo brackets. On a slightly elevated terrace, as well as in the interior of the house, you discover attractive antique furniture, rocking chairs, pedestal tables, oil paintings, cabinets inlaid with mother-of-pearl and tables with thick wooden tops. Aside from the dining room where the meals are prepared by Mrs. Kalaw, the house also contains four guest rooms, two per level. One of the rooms on the second floor is an apartment composed of two bedrooms and one large living room with a built-in kitchen. All the rooms have spacious interiors with bamboo walls and pretty marble bathrooms.

Aside from the rooms in the main house, another house a few steps below, with a sumptuous view of the bay, has three very spacious rooms with a kitchenette. The rooms open onto a terrace through large capiz panels. What a pleasure to wake up in the morning with a wonderful view of the sea and the iridescent flight of the kingfishers!

A stone staircase goes down towards the shore to a little jetty. There is no beach here as the coast is fringed with mangroves. But it is here that you discover the coast and the nearby beaches. Puerto Galera, Coral Garden or White Beach are less than 15 minutes away. Mr. Kalaw can contact the diving clubs and provide you with a guide if you prefer to trek in the mountains.

How to get there

By land, sea and land, 3 hours by car/van from Manila to Batangas harbor. The resort can arrange fir a private vehicle to pick you up from the airport or your residence/hotel in Manila, or you can take your own car. The route is via South Superhighway. Get off at Exit 50A to Lucena, turn right to the Star Tollway, to Batangas get off at Lipa/Tambo exit, turn left to Batangas. At Batangas harbor, leave your car at the parking area.

Resort banca, one hour from Batangas harbor to Muelle Pier. Resort minibus, 5 minutes from Muelle Pier to the resort.
