The date of Eid’l Adha in the Philippines for the year 2024 has not yet been announced. According to Proclamation No. 368, the exact dates for the observance of Eid’l Adha will be determined based on the Islamic calendar (Hijra) or lunar calendar, in consultation with Islamic astronomical calculations. The National Commission on Muslim Filipinos will recommend the actual date to the Office of the President at the appropriate time. This process ensures that the holiday is observed in accordance with Islamic traditions.
What is Eid al-Adha?
Eid al-Adha also known as Feast of the Sacrifice is one of the two significant festivals celebrated by Muslims, observed in the 12th and final month of the Islamic calendar, Dhul Hijjah.
This festival commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God, which is remembered through the practice of Qurbani. Qurbani involves sacrificing an animal, typically a sheep, goat, or cow, and distributing part of the meat to the poor and needy.
Distinct from Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan with celebrations and gratitude for Allah’s blessings following a month of fasting, Eid al-Adha occurs on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah and is known as the festival of sacrifice. While both Eids are times of gathering and celebration, they signify different aspects of faith and practice in Islam.
UPDATE: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has declared June 17, Monday as a regular holiday to give way for the observance of Eid’l Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice.
When is Eid al-Adha 2024 in the Philippines?
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has identified the regular holidays and special non-working days for the year 2024.
In Proclamation No. 368 signed by Executive Secretary Lucas P. Bersamin on October 11, it stated that the Department of Labor and Employment shall implement the guidelines for the proclamation. “The proclamations declaring national holidays for the observance of Eid’l Fitr and Eid’l Adha shall hereafter be issued after the approximate dates of the Islamic holidays have been determined in accordance with the Islamic calendar (Hijra) or the lunar calendar, or upon Islamic astronomical calculations, whichever is possible or convenient,” the Proclamation stated.
With this, the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos is advised, at the appropriate time, to recommend to the Office of the President (OP) the actual dates on which Eid’l Fitr and Eid’l Adha holidays will respectively fall.
The official announcements for the national holidays to observe Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are made once the approximate dates are determined. These dates are set based on the Islamic or lunar calendar, or through Islamic astronomical calculations, as deemed feasible.
The date for Eid al-Adha 2024 is tentatively set for June 17th, although it may vary slightly due to global moon sightings. In the Hijri calendar, the day begins at sunset; therefore, the evening of June 16th is expected to mark the start of the festival.
